Pick your AI assistant

There are four big names worth knowing: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), and Copilot (Microsoft). The honest truth for beginners? They're all excellent, and the differences matter far less than actually getting started with one.

If you want a simple recommendation: Claude is superb at writing, long documents, and careful reasoning. ChatGPT has the biggest ecosystem of extras like image generation. Gemini connects tightly with Gmail and Google Docs. Copilot lives inside Microsoft Office. Pick the one that matches the tools you already use. You can always try the others later, since every one of them has a free tier.

Tip: Don't agonise over the choice. Every skill in this course works with all four assistants, and the prompts are identical.

Install it everywhere

AI becomes genuinely useful when it's within reach at the moment you need it, not when you have to remember a website address. That means installing it in three places: your computer's browser (just bookmark claude.ai or chatgpt.com), the desktop app if one exists for your platform, and crucially, your phone.

On iPhone, open the App Store and search for the assistant by name. On Android, use the Play Store. Download, sign in with the same account you created on your computer, and your conversation history follows you between devices automatically.

Tip: Put the app on your phone's home screen dock, where your messages app lives. If it takes more than one tap to reach, you'll forget to use it.

Free vs paid: what's actually worth it

Every major assistant has a free tier that's genuinely capable, not a crippled demo. Free gets you the full conversation experience with a daily usage limit and sometimes a slightly older model. For your first month, free is absolutely the right choice.

The paid tiers (all around £15–20/month) buy you three things: a smarter model, much higher usage limits, and extras like file uploads, image generation, or voice conversations. Upgrade only when you hit the free limit regularly. That's the signal that AI has become part of your routine and the subscription will pay for itself.

Real example
I'm brand new to AI. Give me a 10-minute guided tour of what you can do, showing me one example each of writing help, answering questions, and planning something.
Welcome! Let's make this practical. 1. Writing help: give me any awkward text and I'll improve it. Try pasting a message you almost sent. 2. Questions: ask me anything you've always wondered about. For example: 'Why do phone batteries degrade?' I'll answer at whatever level you like. 3. Planning: tell me one thing coming up this month, a trip, a dinner, a difficult conversation, and I'll help you prepare. Pick whichever appeals, or say 'surprise me' and I'll demo all three.
What the guided-tour prompt actually gets you. Your first five minutes stop being a blank box.
Try this prompt

Paste this as your very first message. It turns the blank-box problem into a guided demo.

Your turn

Reading about setup isn't setup. Do this now, before the next module. It takes five minutes.

  1. 1Pick one assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot) and create a free account on your computer.
  2. 2Install the same assistant's app on your phone and sign in with the same account.
  3. 3Send your first message: paste in the guided-tour prompt from this lesson.
  4. 4Move the app onto your phone's home screen dock, next to your messages.

Quick check

Answer all 3 correctly to complete this module. Wrong guesses cost nothing, keep trying.

1. You're brand new to AI and can't decide which assistant to pick. What's the best move?

2. When is the right time to upgrade to a paid plan?

3. Why does the course insist you install AI on your phone, not just your computer?
